Senior Design Engineer
Ger was named as Project Manager for the upgrade to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) and network in Athenry in order to achieve compliance with the relevant legislation. Ger held the overall responsibility for the delivery of design review reports, planning documents and contract documents for the WWTP upgrade. Hydraulic modelling of the River Clare in Co. Galway and its tributaries for the existing and proposed scenarios. Production of CFRAM standard flood maps for Claregalway based on existing scenario. Provided hydraulic expertise in the design of temporary works during construction.
Design Engineer (Water)
Civil design for a range of developments including 8 no. schools, an upgrade to an Irish and Scotish National Primary Route, and a 14,000 sq.m waste recycling facility. Design items include surface water and foul drainage, rainwater harvesting, attenuation and infiltration systems, leachate drainage and holding tanks, firewater retention tanks and water supply for the facilities operation and fire-fighting.Flood risk assessments for developments in both Ireland and the U.K., ranging from domestic planning applications, to major commercial developments, to M8/A725 interchange in Glasgow, Scotland.Hydrologic modelling of catchments with extensive knowledge of numeruous methods including the Flood Studies Update (FSU) and the Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH). Hydraulic modelling of rivers using several computer programmes including MIKE, ISIS and Hec-Ras.
Graduate Engineer
The main body of work undertaken by the FRAM section are a series of catchment-based flood risk assessment and management (CFRAM) studies. The objectives of these studies are to assess and map flood hazard and risk, and develop a Flood Risk Management Plan (FRMP) that sets out a long-term set of prioritised actions and measures to manage the identified risks.A member of the contract management team for the Western CFRAM, in which my duties included assessing technical methodologies, reviewing contract deliverables, attending meetings with local authorities, elected members and environmental stakeholders. I also produced and delivered a 40 minute training presentation to local authority engineers on the types of flood maps readily available, I was the client's contract manager for three major river survey contracts ranging up to a million euro in price. From these roles, I drove a 'lessons learned' programme which produced several guidance notes and a survey management tool to assist others in the section.I developed my technical experience as a hydraulic and hydrology modeller on the Suir CFRAM. My role involved the initial model build of 20km of river model, estimating design flows based on the new FSU methodology, and synthesised hydrograph shapes for an unusual catchment based on hydrograph width analysis of gauge records.
Intern Engineer
Worked along side the road design team on all aspects of the N6 Oranmore to Athlone motorway, including drainage and accommodation works. Other assignments included the geometric design of three junctions for planning applications, assisting with traffic impact assessments and road safety audits, and walk-over surveys as part of a route selection process.
