About Gerard Van Den Berg

Gerard has a PhD in Geochemistry from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. At KWR he is team leader and Project Manager. The Innovation & Valorisation team plays a central role in realising innovations, and in creating social and economic impact. As team leader, he heads up a group of professionals and experts who are responsible for shaping and managing KWR’s national and international research programmes. As project coordinator and project manager, he is involved in initiating, implementing and supervising challenging international collaboration projects that contribute to the expertise and ambition of KWR as leading water research institute. He is currently Coordinator of ULTIMATE, a EU funded project focusing on water smart industrial symbiosis. As project manager of Watershare, Gerard is involved in a unique network that aims to bring together leading knowledge institutes and ambitious end-users in the water sector, for purposes of knowledge sharing and the joint conduct of future-oriented projects.

    Manager of the Innovation & Valorisation Team. In the Sustainability and Transitions research group in KWR, the Innovation & Valorisation team is responsible for the setup and coordination of our large research programmes. Together with the drinking water utilities in The Netherlands and the largest water utility of Flanders, we coordinate the Joint Research Programme (BTO), a unique collective research programme. But we also lead the collective research programme with the dune water companies, we host the director of the TKI Watertechnology, With a team of 11 professionals we develop and implement innovations in our research programmes, by actively linking mission driven innovation and giving attention to crosssectoral approaches. Building on the valorisation cycle we create impact for the water sector and society at large. Our team is also responsible for the national and international networking activities of KWR, the international knowledge and innovation programme and Watershare, the knowledge sharing platform, initiated by KWR. We develop and coordinate international cooperative projects with research institutes, end users and industrial partners in Europe and worldwide. We are actively involved in the international research and market oriented networks and initiatives Water Europe (the Water supply and sanitation Technology Platform), GWRC (the Global Water Research Coalition), and ARC (Aqua Research Collaboration). Gerard acts as Project Manager for Watershare and as Programme Manager for the Flemish Dutch water knowledge programme. Gerard also manages many EU and international projects and is Coordinator of the Horizon2002 project ULTIMATE industry water-utility symbIosis for a smarter water society. Previously he has coordinated the Horizon2020 project SUBSOL bringing subsurface water solutions to market.
