Investigated the association of IL-18 expression in chronic and acute critical ill patients. Critical Illness (CCI) is a syndrome observed in patients who survive an acute catastrophic illness or surgical procedure and that require prolonged life-sustaining interventions by medical and nursing staff. The outcomes of CCI patients are characteristics for prolonged life support. The pathophysiological mechanisms may include an up-regulation of “inflammasomes,” which are intracellular macromolecular complexes serving as mediators to the activation of proinflammatory caspase-1, which in turn cleaves potent cytokines such as IL-18. However, there are limited studies investigating cytokine changes between chronic and acute critical ill patients.
