Tasked with streamlining and improving performance of assembly line, including automation of assembly and testing processes, design for new tools and fixtures to speed up production, and benchmarking current process efficiency in accordance to company goals and manufacturing standards. Work also includes the study of existing communications products in the company and their subsequent improvement. Experience falls in many areas, including manufacturing processes such as CNC milling, testing processes for both mechanical and electronic equipment, the process of designing new engineering fixtures, and the use of both standard manufacturing codes and LEAN concepts to improve workflow and maintain high workplace standards.

Erie, Pennsylvania Area

Learned about and practiced metallographic failure analysis in metallic specimens that failed on shop floor or in the field. Duties included preparation of metallographic samples, including abrasive grinding, polishing, and mounting; calibration of lab equipment, including hardness and microhardness testing machines; and assisting in the analysis of several samples, including iterative electrochemical etching and microscopic examination. Main project over the summer was a metallurgical examination analysis of turbocharger locktabs to determine point & type of failure as part of an ongoing investigation into their manufacturing process. Several techniques for effectively preparing samples were created, and cracking at stress concentration points near locktab bend was ultimately discovered.

Designed new concept & compiled list of suppliers for new parts, some due for patent; wrote first edition of purchase specifications for new parts. Main project over the summer was to analyze high-risk loads on operator console’s bolted joints to determine risk of joint separation or slip during train operation, including weight and vibrational/shock forces. Worked closely with principal engineer and members of the drafting team to revise bolted joint stress computation spreadsheet and determine areas of focus in console. Revisions and documentation on the use of the bolted joint spreadsheet are still in use today by many departments.

Repaired and replaced computer hardware, imaged and backed up vital systems, set up new computer workstations, set up and repaired company Blackberry units. Managed requests for equipment and meeting setups, helped set up large projects and presentations, including a week-long training session for new summer analysts.
