Phd Candidate
Double degree under SELECT+ PhD Program. Catalytic conversion of (forestry) biomass
Phd Candidate
Recent years have witnessed much activity to upgrade sugars contained in side-streams from the pulp and paper industry into ethanol and other value-added chemicals. An interesting catalytic route, namely the dehydration of sugars to furans, is considered one of the most promising routes for the production of platform chemicals and fuels. Furans such as furfural are highlighted in the “Top 10 + 4” by the United States Department of Energy list as the most rewarding bio-based platform molecules. Catalytic conversion is one of the main pillars of green chemistry. In this case, solid acid catalysts may offer several advantages over current processes in the conversion of pentosan derivatives e.g. xylose into furfural: high yields, facile separation and reusability of the catalyst. In the present business model, different solid acid catalysts developed for this purpose, as well as a whole process to produce furfural. The results of this work could be used to produce platform chemicals from sugar-based side-streams in the forestry industry, in particular from the pre-hydrolysate liquor for dissolving pulp. These obtained value-added products have applications in a wide range of industrial branches (biofuel, pharmaceutical, agrochemical, petrochemical and chemical industry, among others).

The research group, that Mr. Gerardo Gómez Millán took part of, focuses on sustainable organic chemistry. Since its renaissance at the beginning of the last decade, organocatalysis has proved to be an attractive strategy to carry out asymmetric processes in ways to compete with those involving catalysis with metals, enzymes or chiral metal complexes. From the beginning, it was evident that organocatalytic processes fulfil some of the guidelines of “green” chemistry.Mr. Gerardo Gómez Millán is working in the organic chemistry lab with the project “Synthesis of β-amino acids and their derivatives as chiral organocatalysts in the Michael asymmetric reaction.” The objective of this synthesis proposal is to find a new methodology to produce β3-homo tert-leucine, that has the potential to be used as a “green” organocatalyst.

Wine effluent as feed stock for acidification process.Acidogenic fermentation of wastewater offers a high potential as a preliminary phase in several environmental processes. Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are optimum substrates for the production of methane and hydrogen, and also for polyhydroxialkanoates production and for biological nutrients removal. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biochemical acidogenic potential of a synthetic winery effluent under different F/M ratios, alkalinity values, and inoculum pre-treatment methods. 100% Biodegradable from renewable resources. Sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Semester Project
Empowerment of rural communities: exploring the potential of biomass residues for sustainable rural development. It presents a framework model of three different development scenarios considered for the efficient use of biomass residues. The research cases considered are Denmark for heating stoves whereas India and Romania for cooking stoves to design an efficient implementation model for the use of biomass residues. The aim of the implementation model is to promote sustainable rural development via closed loop by providing community-based development where production, advertisement and selling of the product are done within the community. Different stakeholders play supporting roles of providing micro-finances, technical solutions and awareness for the rural communities as beneficiary. In conclusion, various connections are explained between all the stakeholders and research outcomes are presented for all three cases. Carbon neutral and even carbon negative to promote environmental consciousness.
