Translator-Interpreter For Latin American Refugee Claimants (Volunteer Position)
When l arrived in Canada, I volunteered with the Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support. At this amazing charity organisation, refugee claimants in Canada are assisted free of cost for their application process for refugee protection – along with everything related to their resettlement in the country. As a translator and interpreter, I assisted them in completing the documents they needed to present for their hearings. I fully translated documents from Spanish into English, and as an interpreter, I collaborated with their caseworker who directs them in every step of the way.Working with MCRS was an incredibly rewarding experience that allowed me to help countless families who are running from persecution. It is my greatest hope that soon they can be a part of this country as I am.
Engagement Coordinator
The Challenge is a charity in England that runs multiple social programs sponsored by the U.K. government. They are the largest provider of the National Citizen Service – a program delivered in several parts of England that develop the skills of young people ages 15 to 17 in an intensive 3-week program. As Engagement Coordinator, I orchestrated seven cohorts of young people in the program. This involved presenting the program in schools, following up with each student, as well as accompanying them in every step to support them in preparing for and completing the program successfully. Being an Engagement Coordinator gave me the opportunity to face the hardest crowd I have seen as a public speaker; teenagers. At this point in my career, I had spoken to all kinds of stakeholders – public gatherings, workshops, and governmental and private business meetings. But none of these have been as challenging to convince and address as young people. The Challenge showed me the complexity associated with working in social integration, and the difference that a positive work environment makes. This experience also provided me with the tools to organise multiple tasks simultaneously and offered me extensive leadership training that will help me succeed in any future endeavour with the same passion I had working with The Challenge.
Project Management Officer
The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies is located at Kibbutz Ketura in Israel. This institute carries all kinds of researchers and projects in the environmental field, and provides a safe haven for students to discuss the Arab-Israeli conflict. As part of the project management team, I led two large-scale projects in the Middle East related to water and wastewater management in rural areas of Israel, Palestine, and Jordan. One initiative was sponsored by the European Union and brought economic support to organisations in exchanging knowledge, expertise and researchers. I steered a group of four organisations from Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Portugal and successfully carried out the administration, re-location, task review, and research follow-up with 15 researchers across those 4 countries. In the other project – sponsored by USAID – I drove the logistics related to the installation of water recycling systems in rural areas of Palestine and Israel. These systems direct the wastewater from showers and sinks from people's houses in order to recycle it and irrigate the crops they grow on their own land. I managed the installation of five systems primarily in the West Bank. This involved the screening of the right technology, researching the families, and the collecting data to observe the improvement on water quality and financial viability. As part of the sponsor's requirements, I organised seven workshops in Palestine and Israel, where water and wastewater experts from both sides of the border met to present research and projects they were carrying out. Thanks to these workshops, Palestinian and Israeli experts were able to meet in a safe environment and exchange information that led to different joint ventures that are still ongoing.
Foreign Companies Representative
DVA is a private company located in Caracas, Venezuela that has several subsidiaries focused on the international trade of commodities. As the Foreign Companies Representative, I worked in the division of banknotes and security papers. In this small division (only my supervisor and myself), I led the preparation of tenders for multinational companies such as De La Rue and The Royal Mint. I also presented offers, planned and implemented logistics for the supply of shipments, and followed up with clients and institutions. At DVA, I drove several tenders that were successfully approved and delivered, bringing hundreds of millions of banknotes to Venezuela from the different factories of De La Rue around the world. It was a great opportunity to learn and practice everything I learned related to international trade, customs, sea and airfreight, Incoterms, and logistics. It was also an incredible opportunity to develop strong negotiation skills in the most fast-paced environment I have seen thus far.
Political Section Intern
Early in my career, I decided to do an internship at the political section of the British Embassy Caracas. This section is in charge of all political, economic, human rights, development, environment and communication affairs of the British government in Venezuela and vice versa. As their Political Section Intern, I reported the political situation in Venezuela on a daily basis, which has never been quiet or easy to explain. I also served as a liaison to political figures of the country and conducted research on possible scenarios of the country and the profile of the candidates running in the opposition primaries at the time. This was a perfect step to take in my career because it taught me valuable skills including research, writing skills, and diplomacy to handle all kind of stakeholders – each of these I have used in every task and position I've had ever since.
International Project Coordinator
My first professional experience was with Desarollo Empresarial; a consulting company based in Caracas, Venezuela. I started working right after finishing my bachelor’s degree in International Relations as their International Projects Coordinator. I coordinated everything related to planning and implementation of an international initiative of an Italian company to bring economic development in vulnerable areas of Caracas. This project was presented and approved by the Venezuelan government and with that the start of the pilot project began. I led the recruitment of beneficiaries and trainers, orchestrated their preparation and studies, and organized relocation and all logistics related to bringing trainers from Venezuela to Italy as translating the know-how to reality in these areas of Venezuela. This was my first experience in International Development and helped kindle a passion in me. I hope to continue along this path during the course of my career.
