This is a grassroots, community-based project to provide necessary repairs to the homes of retired/disabled women of color in Wilkinsburg, PA. While there are some nonprofits that serve this population, they are not sufficient and many of the houses in my community suffer from severe water damage from slow leaks that have never been repaired. Not only does this damage impact their quality of life, but it decreases the value of their primary investment - their home. My neighbor, Miss J, was the inspiration for this project, and I have so far replaced old plumbing throughout the house, renovated the bathroom and kitchen (replacing water-damaged fixtures with repurposed materials), and fixed both broken showers. We're raising money to replace the old drum trap under her tub, which has been dripping into the (newly remodeled) kitchen. Since 2007 until recently, I have worked as a Professor, private tutor, and have also created materials for students of all ages for a wide-range of scientific disciplines. My extensive writing experience allows me to explain difficult concepts clearly and with relevant examples. Some examples of the materials I have created are: standardized test-prep materials, in-class activities for younger learners, video games, board games, web quests, and online courses. I also write a report of the annual Waters Symposium at Pittcon. I have worked with David Yaron at CMU to develop activities that reform how we teach the concepts that seem to challenge general chemistry students. To date, I have developed the content for flash-based activities on stoichiometry, dilution, biomolecular binding, and chemical equilibrium.
