Combined with my work as professional manager at the audit regulator of South Africa, I have investigated auditors for over three years. These investigations involved specialised knowledge and skill in order to make expert recommendations to disciplinary tribunals as to whether the particular auditor defendant was guilty of non-compliance with International Standards on Auditing or the Code of Ethics, and whether the financial statements complied with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Over the years, I have assisted hundreds of clients, including large private multinationals, and Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed companies with specialist implementation of IFRS and regulatory reporting compliance for strategy, risk management and business development purposes. I have also assisted many audit firms, large six and otherwise, with quality control file reviews, root cause analysis and corrective action, risk management and technical quality support with new assurance business.

In this contract position, I lead, shaped and influenced the financial reporting and auditing standards scene in South Africa. I set change in motion by numerous written submissions and personal outreach, thereby influencing local and international standard-setters and local regulators concerning the latest accounting and auditing issues faced by chartered accountants of South Africa.I also made a positive difference by engaging with numerous chartered accountants of South Africa on technical issues in the public sector accounting and private sector assurance space and efficiently solved their matters. I was also key in managing important stakeholder relationships such as government, technical committees, and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) regarding SAICA's international membership obligations.

In this contract position, I have written local assurance standards, drafted submissions to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB), and provided technical guidance to registered auditors, by one-on-one communication and by developing published guidance.I have liaised extensively with other regulatory bodies on behalf of the IRBA, concerning draft legislation and regulatory activities that relate to public auditing, and the function of the IRBA, the audit regulator. I enjoyed submitting recommendations on technical auditing issues to the IRBA board, assisting the inspections team with surveillance / firm inspections programmes, and occasionally supporting the finance team with the annual financial statements and the integrated report, and the legal team with expert reports on technical accounting (IFRS) and auditing issues touched on during investigations and prosecution of registered auditors.

I drafted local accounting standards, based on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and IFRS, and supported the organisation's technical submissions to the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board. I also provided published technical guidance and technical forum support to preparers of financial statements in the public sector. I successfully influenced other spheres of government (eg the Auditor-General and Treasury) concerning various technical accounting and finance matters and found pragmatic solutions to the benefit of users of financial statements in order to enhance public finance management in South Africa.
