Managed a team of programmers to convert major insurance company's back office functionality from legacy mainframe systems to client/server. Conversion effort was sized at >40K man-hours for a duration of six months.Technical lead for cross systems issues (UNIX to MVS) during the implementation of an MVS-based reporting application at a large computer chip manufacturer. Client/Server Performance Specialist working on high-end RISC-based UNIX workstations. Responsible for the analysis and tuning of key industry applications benchmarks and assisting in critical customer situations. Expert on configuring, installing and debugging large scale UNIX based SAP R/3 benchmark environment and running the SAP R/3 sales and distribution (SD) benchmark. Produced SAP certified results of measurements done on a cluster of 36 nodes running AIX interconnected with TCP/IP. The measured cluster included a high-performance UNIX based symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) running the DB2 database. Expert in the installation and tuning of both Oracle and DB2 for high performance applications. System configurations benchmarked are valued in the range of $2.5 to $7.9 million dollars. Recognized SAP R/3 expert within IBM. Consultant to other IBM Divisions for SAP work (AS/400 and MVS).

Project Manager for family of IBM Xterminal products. Responsible for the design, development, test and maintenance of 250K lines of Xterminal microcode. Recognized as the driving force behind delivering a recent product that was deemed on an "impossible" schedule.Managed relationship with software vendor ($1M+ per year contract). Managed product schedule, content, and marketing of collateral and assets across worldwide marketing and sales teams.Wrote product descriptions for use by marketing and sales. Managed field support of 4 existing products with an install base of over 50K customers. Tracked and managed project on a weekly basis.

Managed two programming and test groups responsible for design, coding, function testing and ongoing maintenance of complex operating system (MVS) code. One department managed had the highest morale in a 1000+ person programming laboratory as assessed by anonymous company-wide survey. Staffed and built up a cross development team to deliver function on an extremely aggressive schedule. Worked closely with design, system test and performance testing to jointly validate performance characteristics. Restructured team to integrate function testing and service into the programming group. Led team to eliminate problems/issues backlog from four months to a stable inventory of two to four weeks. Turnaround time for software fixes improved over 50% with higher than target fix quality. Challenged the team to increase code development capability by building test tool platforms to automate software build process. Introduced "error injection" as part of the software development process to improve code quality. Represented six departments of over one hundred programmers for project plan sizings and ongoing what-if analysis.

Provided technical support for supercomputing issues in the marketing branch office and for other area marketing personnel. Developed and executed multiple marketing programs to increase demand for computer product in the Boston Higher Education customer set and Government accounts. Benchmarked customer applications and tuned computer systems for optimal performance. Benchmarks included use of standards such as LINPACK, Livermore Loops and Craylib routines. Benchmarked extensively on IBM 3090 and Cray systems. Presented results of benchmark at SHARE, SUPER and to 250+ other Systems Engineers at a technical symposium. Invited to teach classes on vectorization and program tuning techniques. Met with customers of all levels from Application Engineers through University Presidents.

Designed high level function specifications of new support for mainframe (VM/XA) computer operating system. Documentation included external interfaces, system structure descriptions, function placements and control flow scenarios. Wrote prototype code for experimental functions, assessed technical feasibility of a high end UNIX product on a VM/XA base.

Responsible for migration of the two leading structural analysis applications (ANSYS and NASTRAN) to an enhanced mainframe operating system (MVS/XA with the 3090 Vector Facility).Tuned over 450K lines of FORTRAN code and 5K lines of Assembler code to improve application performance. Exploited 31-bit addressing and demonstrated vector processing capability which was key to the acceptance of the vector facility by the scientific community. Improved I/O balance and explored parallel processing techniques ultimately incorporated into future enhancements. Provided scientific coding techniques to vendors for exploitation of IBM features. Coded high performance Vector Assembler Language routines for use in vendor applications. Recognized as an expert in competitive hardware and software for vector area. Developed benchmark programs for comparison of the 3090 to the Hitachi IAP system located in the Tokyo Scientific Lab in Japan. Measurements included key algorithm performance tests and memory bandwidth verification.
