Gerry is a forest conservation leader and policy expert with more than 25 years of experience working on public policy issues in Washington, DC. He specializes in collaborative efforts with urban and rural community groups to help them participate in public policy discussions about forests and share forest stories from their communities with national policymakers. Gerry is the Principal and Founder of Forest Conservation Leadership, LLC, which works with public and private entities to promote communication and public dialogue about forests. He is currently completing a book, with support from the U.S. Forest Service, entitled Seeing the Forest for the Trees: A Storytelling Guide for Forest Service Leaders and Partners. He also serves as a Co-Chair of the Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition; as an active partner in the Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition; and as a Board member of the Sierra Institute for Community and Environment. For much of his career, Gerry worked in various leadership positions at American Forests, a national non-profit conservation organization that advocates for the protection and restoration of forests in the U.S. and abroad. He served as Interim Executive Director (2010) and Senior Vice President for Conservation Programs (2011-2013). Prior to that, he led the organization’s advocacy efforts, which included writing and delivering testimony in Congress, conducting issue analysis, and preparing briefing papers. He also wrote newsletters, magazine articles, and editorials on forest policy issues for members and external audiences.
