For most of my life I was a researcher interested in how the brain functions and what causes it to not function correctly. The major focus of my research as a Professor in the University of Florida was the structural and signaling molecules of the nervous system, particularly those of neurons. One of the tools I used to perform these studies was antibodies, highly specific molecules which bind to other molecules. Antibodies, if made and characterized well, are extremely useful research and diagnostic reagents. I learned how to make them for my own use and for other researchers and then began to send some to biotechnology companies, who put them on the market. As sales of these antibodies became larger and larger, I decided to start my own company to continue producing these antibodies and to make new antibody reagents. So EnCor Biotechnology drifted into existence, at first under the name ABC Biotechnology Inc. in December 1999. Moving slowly at first, the company changed names to EnCor Biotechnology Inc. and first occupied rented lab space in November 2002, in the Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator facility, owned by the University of Florida. In 2 years the company was turning a small profit, and by November 2006 we had moved from our rented lab to a new facility, where we plan to stay for a while. We have currently an inventory of over 250 products with many more in development, and we supply reagents to individual researchers and to most major biotechnology reagent companies, such as Abcam, EMD-Millipore, Novus, Life Technologies, Santa Cruz and many others. At the end of February 2013 I retired from the University of Florida to allow me to work full time in my company. This has been keeping me off the streets ever since.Specialties: Monoclonal and polyclonal antibody production and characterization, development of enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), recombinant protein expression and advanced microscopical imaging.
