My career at Kendal power Station started in February 1996 as a Learner Plant Operator where I worked shift for three years.In August 1999 I started as a Mechanical Technician in the Outside Plant. I was responsible for technical assistance/advice for materials handling areas, project management of small projects & the investigation, problem solving and root cause analyses on plant failures.In October 2001 I started as a Section Supervisor in the Power Plant Department. I had sixteen direct reports. I was responsible for staff working on the boiler and turbine mechanical plant areas, which entailed the management of staff, finances, contracts, safety, assets, plant availability/reliability.In July 2003 I started as the Head of Technical Services in the Power Plant Department. I had six senior technicians reporting to me. I was responsible for providing technical advise, manage NEC contracts, project manage outages and managed the whole departments budget.In July 2005 I started as the first Coal Manager. I facilitated the daily production meeting and had to provide guidance to all disciplines on the "common plant" area. I was responsible for the coal supply ensuring the right quality & quantity, to project manage major refurbishments projects and actively liaised between the mining house (BHP Billiton) and Eskom Head office.In July 2006 the Power Station Manager requested me to assist with the management of the Outside Plant Maintenance Department. I took up the challenge and managed this department until December 2007. At the time this was the single biggest department and I had a total of ninety employees under my management which included six senior supervisors as direct reports. I was responsible for the effective management of personnel, efficient cost control, projects, NEC contracts, ensuring safe execution of all work according to production priorities as well as the Department’s compliance to legal requirements, (OHSA, BCEA, etc)
