Journey to Simplicity is a methodology which we developed in house with support from some external consultants. In principle its all about developing a winning product bundle, based on a very thorough understanding of the consumer need states, the competitive environment and the market segments that these products play in. Whilst at the same time developing an in-depth understanding of our supply chain and highlighting where the key complexity/cost drivers lie. By linking the two it allows us to create a product bundle which satisfied all the consumer needs but minimizes the impact on our supply chain. The next step is to take the simplified portfolio and devise the most optimum supply chain to deliver this bundle - streamlining and maximizing the efficiency of the network.Benefits have been seen/delivered in the following areas: growth through improved product design, white spaces identified, Procurement scale on reduced set of recipes, ingredients, pack formats, etc. Furthermore significant manufacturing benefits have been delivered through streamlined network design and enhanced line efficiencies. These are just some of the benefit areas.

The E2E approach is about taking a fresh look at the value chain to find out what adds value to the consumer and customer whilst cutting out anything that doesn’t. “Consumers have no interest in whether our different functions meet their business objectives,” explains Gerwin. “We need to understand what’s really important to them, and then measure our performance against that. If all functions collaborate to achieve this, we’ll end up with satisfied customers and a growing, high performing business.” The money saved by eliminating elements unimportant to consumers can be reinvested in areas of greater value. One of the current active projects looks at changing the way we manufacture the product allowing us to eliminate non value added materials and reduce the amount of packaging used…including plastic & cardboard used just to transport our product packaging (over 60t alone!). The aim is to reinvest part of the savings back into price driving further growth. “When we have an idea for a project we take consumer insight into account, either using existing market data or by testing it with a consumer group. But trying to do the best for the consumer means we don’t always see the potential impact along the value chain, which could drive up a product’s costs to us and the customer" says Bärbel Thouvenot, Director E2E Projects EuropeThe E2E Team act as facilitators and it’s up to the category teams to request their services.
