Graduate Student (Ph.D., Biochemistry)University Of Michigan 2008 - Aug 2013Ann Arbor, Michigan, UsStudied the architectural characteristics of membrane protein complexes using electron microscopy (EM). G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the primary signal transduction units responsible for the communication between cells and their environment. Thus, GPCRs are involved in every aspect of human physiology and are currently the target of more than 30% of drugs. I applied single particle electron microscopy (EM) analysis to obtain the first snapshots of agonist occupied β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR), a well-studied model GPCR, in complex with its primary signal transducer, the heterotrimeric G protein Gs (Gαsβγ).Teaching Experience:Graduate Student Instructor for Biochemistry 415- Didactic lecturing, held 50+ student study sessions, and office hours.Awarded:- ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award Nomination - 2013- Lee Murphy Memorial Prize (Most significant paper or series of papers) - 2013- Minor J. and Mary Coon Award (Overall Excellence in Research, Teaching, and Service to the Department) - 2012- Molecular Biophysics Training Grant Fellowship - 2009 thru 2011 -
Research Technician / Lab ManagerUniversity Of Michigan 2005 - 2008Ann Arbor, Michigan, UsAs a technician and lab manager, my research focused on studying the DNA double strand break (DSB) repair pathway and lymphocyte development. Using a number of mouse models that were deficient in different repair proteins, I was able to apply a number of molecular biology techniques including Western/Southern/Northern Blotting, FACS, spectral karyotyping (SKY) microscopy, cell culture and RNAi to better understand the roles these proteins played in DNA repair. In addition to the research, I was also responsible for managing the everyday operations of the research lab.
