  • Optics For Hire
    Principal
Optics For Hire Jun 2009 - Jul 2013
    Arlington, Ma, Us
OFH - Optics, Electronics, and Systems engineering.* Attracted, closed, and managed client engagements. E.g.: LED illumination, bio-medical device development (ophthalmoscopes, fluorescent DNA imaging), robotic rangefinders, imaging systems. Patent / IP deep review and advisory services to patent-buyers and litigators in optics.* Sale of ~20-patent portfolio in 3-D display technologies that OFH had acquired from Actuality. Despite difficult IP sales environment, identified patent broker, educated prospects about technology value, worked with President and broker to structure deal, and provided return to Actuality shareholders.
  • Actuality Systems
Co-Founder & Cto (Formerly Actuality Systems, Inc.)
    Actuality Systems 2007 - Apr 2009
    Us
Developed prostate cancer treatment product using machine vision to analyze ultrasound. In a 2007 pivot, Actuality Systems slowed development of 3-D displays and entered the medical device SW field, changing name to Actuality Medical.* In difficult financial environment, wrote business plan with CEO and raised $2-3M to continue operations.* To rapidly prototype our technology despite a lack of first-hand experience in prostate procedures, became certified to view operations in the OR, worked with engineers in tracking a 2-D ultrasound probe in 3-D, and coordinated with hospital clinicians and staff to permit our recording procedure imagery.* Transitioned to (wind-down) CEO role in early 2009. To extract and preserve value from the company's prior work in 3-D display in the absence of new capital: quickly assessed burn rate, extended our runway with engineering team to package or sell inventory, and identified a buyer for Actuality's assets (OFH, 2009). Secured authorization from 70+ shareholders for wind-down. Sold these patents again in 2010.
  • Actuality Systems
    Founder, Cto, And Founding Ceo
    Actuality Systems Jun 1997 - 2007
    Us
Back in the early 00s, we were one of the computer display industry's most recognized 3-D display companies: volumetric 3-D displays! Advanced hologram-like computer peripherals; Actuality's engineers pioneered systems with 100x the resolution of typical laptop displays, invented new classes of rasterization algorithms, and demonstrated light field displays with 10x the realism of competing "lenticular" autostereoscopic displays. Used GPU and TI DLP technologies.* Founded, built, and managed team that invented a host of disruptive visualization technologies. Most notably, Perspecta 100-million voxel volumetric display, with OpenGL API using MEMS projectors.* To sustain high-risk technology development, raised $13M from angels and oil & gas industry.* To propel early revenue, sold into: medical imaging, drug discovery, petroleum, and scientific research.* PRODUCT MANAGER - defined product requirements via use-cases for medical and oil & gas offerings, e.g. interventional guidance of cardiac electrophysiology probe with external tracking in 3-D.* PROGRAM MANAGER - secured highly competitive grants (NIST ATP, SBIR) totaling $2M, kept operations within budget, oversaw or architected key technical developments, and managed audits.* To sustain competitive advantage, built the strongest IP portfolio in the sector, in part by coaching the engineering team to write high-quality invention disclosures. Result: 20 issued patents.* Key technical advances: world's highest resolution 3-D display (2001), most "views" in flat-panel autostereoscopic display, 20+ megapixel 2-D projection display from a single TI DLP.* Widely publicized in: CNN, Wired, Popular Science, Scientific American, Frost & Sullivan, Saatchi & Saatchi, CSI:NY.
  • Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (Pppl)
Summer Science Awards Program (Pre-College Summer Research)
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (Pppl) Jul 1992 - Aug 1992
    Princeton, New Jersey, Us
Prototyped a Faraday Cup-style alpha particle detector at the PPPL Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor site.
