Senior Design ProjectRichard Childress Racing Jan 2016 - Apr 2016Welcome, Nc, Us• In 2015, NASCAR updated their rulebook to allow drivers to adjust the track bar from inside the car. This change improves the safety of pit stops by reducing the time pit crew members are on the right side of the car. The current automatic track bar adjustment system with mechanical override used by RCR is a working system, but it needs improvement. In the beginning my final semester at NC State, our class was divided into six teams who were all given the same problem statement from RCR. The designs from each group should be developed for a racing environment that favors ruggedness and weight reduction over appearance and cost.• Our final design incorporated a worm drive to adjust the Panhard bar and a spline shaft coupling to enable a mechanical override. The electrical system uses an Arduino and motor shield to make automatic adjustments to the Panhard bar at multiple speeds with two user-friendly switches for operation. Exact location of the Panhard bar is tracked with a string potentiometer and displayed on an LCD screen. Weight, simplicity, cost, durability, manufacturability, and workmanship were all considered throughout the project. -
