We set standards across every aspect of predevelopment, which organized and supported every step of the predevelopment / innovation process as well as business and quality management (FDA Classes I, II, III regulatory and more), some of which have been rolled out to the global organization as best practices.> Long-Range VisionIn my earlier role (see below), I helped to set 5-year roadmaps. In my current role, I became aware that for innovation pipeline management, our timeframe had to be three times that length to ensure that all contributing functions could align their vision across the innovation-market-order-cash continuum, not to mention our company’s mission statement. My colleagues and I collaborated on the project, which resulting in my taking over the M&A and acquisition integration for the front end / innovation program.

If there were ways to improve our productivity, I was dedicated to identifying the most streamlined and effective pathways to achieving these predevelopment goals, even as I contributed as needed on the technology side to support continuous improvement.Strategically, my major accomplishments overlaid strategic influence onto technical acumen and support:> Roadmapping the predevelopment 5-year plan. I am deeply committed to the Kaizen approach, which I used to bring together diverse groups across development, intellectual property, scientific affairs, quality, regulatory, safety, and dental / clinical SMEs. The coordinated and multifunctional process we conceived during this particular workshop enabled us to collaborate more smoothly and effectively.> Dedicating our processes to lean and agile principles of project management, I spearheaded a new process for predevelopment within OHC that helped us cut our predevelopment delivery schedule by up to 80%. The key to this kaizen was bringing together technical leadership; as the interim project manager, I piloted the approach and yielded 6-plus figures in new revenue. Moreover, the approach became the standard for all new predevelopment projects.> Leading TechnicallyOn the technical side, I directed 5 Open Innovation projects and 3 technology transfers from Philips Research (7 of 8 transferred as scheduled). > Building PartnershipsFinally, as a former academic, I was excited to join forces with The University of Washington, through which we accelerated our safety and efficacy testing protocols in a mutually beneficial corporate-academic collaboration.

As a strategic leader and development engineer, I influenced peer product architects to classify areas of team expertise to improve our collaboration. With application of this new framework, we achieved +50% work efficiencies and normalized to a 40-hour workweek. Of note, I came into Phillips never having led strategy or technology / predevelopment in the brush and oral health spaces; I continue to serve as an expert in the field and seek to expand our IP and market footprint.For this work, I won the Philips Accelerate Transformation Award for root cause analysis (acoustics and structural vibrations) and solutions delivery for 4 teams’ products, leading to -80% prototyping time and +$24M product sales. I also won the Philips “Take Ownership” Award for successes taking on 2 additional competency leadership roles after peers’ departures. During this time, I also earned top box performer.

Hired to direct product innovation, ideation and development of oral healthcare products. Oversaw root-cause-failure analysis of sound and structural issues, addressed unmet consumer needs and maintained sustainable advantages by building innovation pipeline with creative ideas, technical solutions and invention disclosures. Worked with marcom and ad agencies to communicate consumer benefits and values. Mentored junior engineers. Facilitated weighed design assessment on both in vivo efficacy and user experience by developing four transfer functions. Resolved a product development issue in less than two months, after team had struggled for a year. Filed eight provisional patents as the result of product innovations.

Trained engineering and sales support teams on flow cytometry and imaging. Mentored junior engineers and scientists on process of innovation to innovation process. Worked with product commercialization process from feasibility through to launch for three products.

Progressively promoted with increased responsibilities and scope to lead a team of 20 in cytometry, spectroscopy and instrumentation in developing high-throughput harvesting, extraction, purification, diagnostics and processing of bio and petro fuels. Acted as Team Lead of harvesting and extraction for a consortium of 36 institutions, including three labs, 30 biofuels companies and 10 universities. Worked with legal counsel to establish IP portfolio and balance patent versus trade secret against marketability and technology transfer strategies. Co-founded National Association Algal Biofuels and Bioenergy. ✔ Served as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI of seven grants, including a five-year NCCR-NIH P41 and 4 licensing. Established cooperative R&D agreements with BD, Miller-Coors, Chevron, Exxon, Shell, GE Medical and others for bio/petrofuel, biomedical instrumentation and isotope production projects that generated $27M annually in research funding. Won 2007 and 2010 R&D 100 awards.
