For instance, why does a German have to pay 48% in income tax while Germany falls deeper into debt whereas a Singaporean pays 7% taxes on the same income, has a secure retirement scheme, and yet Singapore is able to run a fiscal surplus ? Incentives, and the lack thereof, shape us all. If these incentives become unhealthily skewed for too long the whole system becomes unstable. Few people realize how close to bankruptcy many western countries really are after decades of overspending and associated failure to plan for their retirees. Eventual financial collapse through default or hyperinflation, caused by a loss of confidence in the country's respective currency, is inevitable at some point. Real debts have grown much too large, debt growth is accelerating and there is no political will to address these issues. Within this environment, owning physical bullion in a safe jurisdiction, which cannot be defaulted upon and whose value increases in times of inflation and financial distress is obvious.
