About Gianmario Perrucci
The world of space propulsion has become more passionate for me as a result of my studies at Politecnico di Milano and the experiences I have had during that period. I cultivated this passion for several years within the Skyward Experimental Rocketry student association, where, together with my team, I got to work on a hybrid propulsion engine.Today I study and work in the field of hypersonic and computational fluid dynamics at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, thus having the opportunity to learn more and specialize in this field.

The topic of space debris and its re-entry into the atmosphere is highly current. Predicting their trajectory and whether they will not be completely destroyed by friction is necessary to classify their hazards. A project, conducted by the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, aims to develop an approach for simulating the complete re-entry phase of these objects. The evaluation of aerothermodynamic loads is up to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which must be embedded within an automated workflow that requires continuous simulations with respect to different conditions. To do this, it is necessary to avoid one of the biggest bottlenecks in CFD, which is the mesh generation process.Anisotropic metric-based adaptation has been recognised as a method to overcome this problem. Such a strategy makes it possible to create triangular meshes that autonomously adapt to the flow features. This work aims to create a tool based on this approach by combining the capabilities of Eilmer, a software specialised in hypersonic problems, and refine, a NASA program capable of handling those adaptations.
