About Gianna M. May Sanchez

I am a history PhD candidate at the University of Michigan. My work primarily focuses on the history of medicine in the twentieth century American West, with particular interest in folk healing, curanderismo, and women’s health. My dissertation, “Grandmothering Midwives: Negotiation, Legislation, and Medical Authority in the New Mexico Birthing Room, 1880 – 1950,” examines medical regulation, midwifery, and women’s health in 20th c. New Mexico. I am an editor at Nursing Clio and a Graduate Researcher for the Sterilization and Social Justice Lab at the University of California, Los Angeles. My public history and community engagement includes working with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL) to improve outreach and education of Latinx/e history utilizing digital methods and technology. In 2019, I worked with Homewise in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to preserve and showcase the life of Maclovia Zamora, a local curandera and herbalist.
