After an educational externship, I was offered to stay on with the unit as a PCT. This opportunity allows me to continue to grow as a future nurse with hands on learning experience. Each shift I assist my fellow PCTs and registered nurses to care for patients. I perform daily care including bathing, oral hygiene, food ordering/feeding, and ambulation/turning of patients. This position allows me to further develop my communication skills with patients, family members, and the healthcare team.

This summer, I worked on the medical surgical oncology unit at HNMC under the supervision of a registered nurse to bridge the gap between the classroom and real world nursing. During this experience I learned and practiced how to properly communicate with patients, families, and other interdisciplinary departments in the hospital as well as performing assessments and med pass daily. I gained a better understanding on my role as an RN including proper documentation/charting, admission profiles, and the daily tasks of providing what patients need physically and emotionally. I was fortunate enough to witness and participate in blood transfusions, IV chemotherapy, plasmapheresis exchange, and more giving me the experience I will one day need.

Shadowed various nurses throughout four different units in the outpatient regional site of MSK including medical oncology, infusion, radiation, and symptom care clinic. This opportunity allowed me to gain a better understanding of specific cancers and how they are treated routinely. I watched various procedures including accessing of ports, paracentesis, IV and SubQ chemo, and CT/PET scans. I learned the importance of communication with the health care team and family including patient education and coping skills for emotional health.

A fellow student and myself collaborate to foster a small group tutoring session for freshman anatomy students. We work together to review concepts, prep for exams, and teach study habits. As a group, we build each other up and instill confidence in one another.

I was given the privilege by my previous nursing professors to tutor underclassmen currently enrolled in patho/pharm weekly in preparation for quizzes and exams. This was a vital source in their success in the classroom throughout the semester. Together we worked on study skills, reviewed and relearned content, went over prioritization and application questions specific to nursing, and self care methods throughout nursing school.

I worked with children of all ages to provide a nourishing and safe environment to teach them the art and sport of gymnastics. I dedicated my time to fostering a group of children who supported each other through teaching the important of teamwork and praise. We all worked together to motivate one another and stay determined to achieve new goals and skills.
