About Gilbert Ching
Dedicated professional pursuing a career in the mining industry. Over 4 years’ experience in Production Geology involving logging and mapping of blast hole patterns, material routing and ore control reports, and assay data management with acQuire software. Multiple publications on subjects such as Economic Geology, Igneous Petrology, and Hydrology utilizing own experimental data and critiques of geologic literature. Motivated and willing to relocate. My thesis topic was unstudied felsic intrusion in the Stillwater Mine. I mapped these sites with the assistance of mine geologists, collected and described numerous samples, and performed elemental and stable isotope analyses on select samples. In addition to publication of a thesis, I presented numerous aspects of this research at the 2016 Geological Society of America (GSA) Penrose conference in Red Lodge, MT and the 2016 GSA Annual Meeting in Denver, CO. As an undergraduate at the University of Kansas, I undertook a summer research project in hydrology on the Konza Prairie (Flint Hills). This involved maintenance and deployment of a HydroLab MS5 multiprobe as part of a project on groundwater acidification, results of which were presented at the 2011 GSA Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN. My professional interests are in geochemistry and economic geology. I am well-versed in basic geochemical techniques. At WSU, I used x-ray fluorescence (XRF), laser ablation, vacuum-line stable isotope analyses, and inductively coupled mass-spectrometry during my thesis research. I also worked part-time at WSU’s GeoAnalytical Lab, doing sample preparation XRF analyses. Through my research I have also familiarized myself with Microsoft Office and Adobe Illustrator. I am available to discuss new opportunities, please contact me directly at gbertching@gmail.com.

Assistant Language Teacher
Current• Prepared English-language lesson plans for Japanese students• This past year more than 18% of all students passed the STEP Eiken test of English proficiency. Most schools pass about 10% of students• Designed activities exploring the Greek and Latin origins of the English language
Geologist Ii
• Conducted daily ore control activities such as material routing, rock modeling, and assay analysis. • Assisted less-experienced staff to log blast hole cuttings and construct geologic maps as needed • Mentored and trained new geologists in ore control techniques, assay interpretations, and mine geology• Supervised and assisted a team of Engineering Technicians to collect and send blast hole samples to laboratory for assaying. Ensured that each sample collected by the Engineering Technicians was sent to the lab in a timely manner and that each was sent for the correct assay method. • Database administrator for the acQuire Production Geology Database. Extremely familiar with acQuire software, maintained importers to receive assay data from lab and managed blast hole/assay data. Compiled monthly QA/QC report of all blasthole samples for verification by third-party accounting firm. • Collaborated with Mill metallurgists to sample and test pregnant leach solution-contaminated ore for floatation and recovery effects. Contaminated ore was shown to greatly lower the pH of the mill floatation circuits, increased lime use five-fold, and would have caused a 10% decrease in copper recovery.• Excellent safety record with no incidents in over 4 years in an open-pit environment. Routinely mentor new hires in best safety practices
Geologist I
Geologist I, Freeport-McMoRan, Bagdad, AZ (2018-2021)• Logged blast hole cuttings for lithology, ore type, faulting and predominant alteration to construct geologic maps of individual patterns and entire benches. • Worked closely with mine planning and mine operations to categorize and route material as ore, ore blend, waste, etc., based on observed geology and assay results.• Worked closely with Mine Ops and Engineering to ensure that all shovels and loaders had the correct AutoCAD files and that all AutoCAD files were formatted correctly• Regularly updated short-range geology block model of lithology and ore type in MineSight. Determined whether a specific re-assay or primary assay result would be used in coding the model. • Logged diamond drill core and RC chips and approved daily drilling invoices from third-party drillers
Laboratory Technician
Prepared samples for X-Ray Diffraction analysis and undertook projects on behalf of staff scientists and senior advisors when needed. Collaborated with diverse group of laboratory staff to determine best practices for challenging projects.•Wrote standard operating procedure for processing XRF data with Python-based software.•Reduced analytical costs and supported exploration by preparing drill core for gamma-ray log analysis and analyzing whole-rock chemistry of core and cuttings samples with Bruker Tracer-IV portable XRF.•Participated in monthly safety meetings and ensured that all potentially hazardous materials were stored and cataloged properly.
Laboratory Technician
Prepared samples for XRF and Inductively Coupled Plasma analysis.• Assisted visitors with sample preparation and answered any questions.• Followed client’s instructions carefully regarding project goals and outcomes.• Utilized rock-crushing and heat fusion equipment• Acid dissolution of samples for ICP-MS analysis
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Taught several courses including Economic Geology. Organized and entered student grades in department database.•Communicated expectations to students, prepared lectures / demonstrations, and graded and organized student coursework to meet deadlines.•Researched ore deposit types and selected ore and host rock samples for student activities
Research Assistant
Operated Hydrolab MS5 multiprobe in support of research relating to groundwater acidification.• Maintained and deployed scientific equipment in a field setting• Collected groundwater data (pH, temperature, conductivity, turbidity); collected samples when necessary.• Organized scientific data for publication.
