MetroMining was founded in Rotterdam with the aim to convert waste streams from the city into valuable materials for the local manufacturing industry. This adds value for the city, inhabitants and creates opportunities for entrepreneurs. The mission is to utilize locally available organic waste streams from metropolitan regions for the production of high-end raw materials and products. These materials add and promote innovation, clean technology, smarter cities & ports, employment, and a cleaner living environment.

Current patterns of industrial and economic growth are causing stress upon nature. It is now increasingly evident that the corrective approaches of pollution control and top-down environmental regulation are not sufficient to solve these problems, and to prevent new ones from arising. There is an urgent need for a paradigm shift to pollution prevention, and for economic development strategies that sharply minimize negative environmental and social impacts while restoring past damage wherever possible.

The Happy Shrimp Farm was the first tropical shrimp farm in Europe. It was a dynamic and innovative example of a new eco-industrial company in the port of Rotterdam that benefits the economy and environment.

Part of the unit Industry and Sustainability later named various other names, we were to develop a strategy or facility in the port and industrial complex in Rotterdam to create new-energy such as biomass, wasteheat, wind and photovoltaic.

Het Project Recyclingindustrie is opgezet in 1994. Vanuit de gedachte dat de goederenstromen door de Rotterdamse haven niet alleen uit nieuwe producten bestaan, maar ook uit afvalmateriaal, zou het project gaan zoeken naar mogelijkheden om industriële bedrijvigheid rond die goederenstromen te groeperen. Op die manier droeg het project bij aan een schoner milieu, het besparen van grondstoffen alsmede aan nieuwe economische activiteiten.
