Giles Oldroyd is researching the potential of self-fertilising crops to improve the environmental sustainability and equity of global food systems. He studies the mechanisms by which some species of plants can form beneficial interactions with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, providing a natural source of nitrogen for plant growth and with mycorrhizal fungi that facilitate nutrient capture from the soil.Giles is a Professor of Crop Science and the Director of the Crop Science Centre at the University of Cambridge. He is also the Project Leader of the ENSA programme.
