I covered mostly public and consumer health and the business of health care in Northwest Indiana, a region of nearly a million people southeast of Chicago, as well as health policy in Indiana. The Times is the second-largest newspaper in the state. I also co-edited The Times' bimonthly health magazine.

I covered health and other general assignment news in Lawrence, Kansas, a college town of nearly 90,000 in the northeast part of the state.

I covered the crime, courts, agriculture, business, county government and religion beats. I wrote a weekly column. I took and processed my own photographs. I laid out pages and edited copy.
