Writer

Current

New York, New York

Jan 2017 - Present

Volunteer Secretary, Former President

Dgt Alumni Association, Inc.

Brooklyn, New York, United States

This is a current volunteer position. As an undergraduate at Pratt Institute, back in the early 1970s, it was my good fortune to join a local Greek letter association that began in 1898. I served two years as its President. After a 38 year absence from New York City, I have returned to once again actively partake in the fellowship, this time as a member of the Alumni Association. In my capacity as its current President, I am leading a strategic planning effort, helping to rebuild an undergraduate program of the 21st Century that is fully aligned with the Pratt Mission, and helping to shore up a relationship with Pratt Institute that had languished in recent years.

2013 - Nov 2016

President

Gil Gerald & Associates, Inc

New York

Gil Gerald & Associates, Inc., (GG&A) established in 1990, supports grassroots organizations addressing pressing community needs. GG&A's services range from grant-writing for the purpose of soliciting federal, state, county, municipal and private sector funding, to technical report-writing, conducting needs assessments, facilitating strategic planning and other group processes, and providing technical support in fundraising and development, as well as in increasing cultural competency in serving LGBT individuals and families.

Sep 1990 - Nov 2016

Project Director

Lgbt Tristar

San Francisco

LGBT TRISTAR was project/division of Gil Gerald & Associates. Under contract to the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, between 2007 and 2010, the project provided technical assistance and training to alcohol and other drug (AOD) prevention, treatment and recovery support services providers in all California's 58 counties. The purpose was to increase the capacity of these organizations to provide services that are culturally responsive to LGBT individuals and families. This work continued through 2012 via a collaboration, the Community Alliance for CLAS, lead by ONTRACK Program Resources, located in Sacramento, CA. LGBT-TRISTAR was more recently under contract to JBS International, to provide similar services in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. LGBT TRISTAR contracts with a pool of expert consultants to provide the services, and works collaboratively with faculty at San Francisco State University to develop the curricula used to provide training.

Executive Director

Minority Aids Project

I served as the Executive Director of one of the earliest community-based organizations organized to address HIV/AIDS in the Black community. My tenure was at a critical juncture of aggressive organizational and programatic growth and change begun by its founding Executive, Bishop Carl Bean. I managed a staff of roughly 10- 15. They provided HIV prevention and HIV/AIDS supportive services. My responsibilities included reporting to the Board of Directors and securing public and private sector resources to support the work.

Jun 1989 - Sep 1990

The National AIDS Network was a pioneering association of more than 500 community-based AIDS services providers responding to the AIDS epidemic during the early 1980s. Its key supporting members included AIDS Action (MA), AIDS Project Los Angeles (CA), San Francisco AIDS Foundation (CA), Northwest AIDS Foundation (WA), and Gay Men's Health Crisis (NY). I was hired by NAN's first Executive Director, Paul Kawata to serve as the Director of Minority Affairs. In that capacity I served as an advisor, working with the CDC and OMH to improve the government's anemic response to HIV/AIDS in racial and ethnic communities in particular. I alos provided technical assistance to organizations in the field, and was editorially responsible for the publication of a monthly newsletter, NAN Multicultural Notes.
