About Gillen Brown

My training as an astrophysicist has prepared my to succeed in a wide range of roles. During my Ph.D. I developed strong technical skills, including Python and C programming, Bayesian modeling, analysis of large data sets, and data visualization. I used these extensively throughout the six years of my Ph.D. training (resulting in four scientific publications). I also have strong soft skills, including the ability to solve complex problems, work independently, think critically, take initiative, and learn quickly. In particular, I have strong communication skills developed by presenting my research to audiences of all levels, from children at a natural history museum to astronomers at professional conferences.I recently started a new position as a Research Staff Member at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Alexandria, VA.

I worked on two main projects as a graduate student researcher during my PhD, both with the goal of learning how star clusters form and evolve. First, I ran a series of numerical simulations of galaxy formation that model star cluster formation on the Stampede2 supercomputer, then analyzed the resulting 60 TB dataset. Second, I measured the radius of 6,000 star clusters seen in Hubble Space Telescope images using a Bayesian model. In both of these projects, I did data analysis of large datasets (primarily in Python), gave research talks, wrote scientific papers, and wrote grants to secure funding and supercomputer time.
