About Alison Gillespie
I am a skilled writer who enjoys making complicated topics accessible and interesting to the general public. As a public affairs specialist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, I help to explain and promote the research and work of the Office of Research. I field reporter inquiries, write press releases and web stories, and prepare science experts for interviews. Previous to my work at NOAA, I was a communications specialist for the National Science Foundation's National Science Board. I helped science thought leaders communicate in plain language with policymakers, stakeholder groups and the general public. This includes speech writing, press releases, op-eds, talking points, letters, blog posts and one-pagers and pitched stories to reporters. I also managed social media accounts. The Board is comprised of 24 presidentially appointed experts on a wide variety of science topics, and includes presidents of universities, former astronauts, and innovators from private industry. They co-lead the agency with the Director. Previous to working for NSF I was a public affairs specialist for the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a large federal lab in Gaithersburg, MD. In 2014 I published a non-fiction book (Hives in the City, Croydon Hill, www.hivesinthecity.com) which won a Silver Medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards. I am an accomplished public speaker and I have been hired many times to discuss bees and their health problems, including colony collapse disorder. Before freelancing, I worked for several non-profit organizations, writing feature stories, web content, newsletter articles, annual reports, and press releases. I also maintained press databases and pitched stories to editors and assisted at science briefings on Capitol Hill. My solo writing has appeared in numerous publications nationwide, including Smithsonian, Modern Farmer, Frontiers in Ecology and the Chesapeake Bay Journal. In my free time I advocate for pedestrian safety, better transit options and more housing near urban centers and transit hubs. During the pandemic I co-founded Open Streets Montgomery, a coalition of organizations dedicated to repurposing underused street space for people instead of cars. When not at my computer writing, I like to hike or ride my mountain bike in the woods and maintain a backyard garden for wildlife.
Listed skills include Newsletters, Publications, Feature Articles, Newspapers, and 23 others.
