Founder - Chair22Q11 Northern Ireland Sep 2013 - PresentBelfast, Northern Ireland22q11 Northern Ireland was founded as both a support to families affected by 22q and to help raise awareness of this genetic condition. 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome is the second most common genetic disorder after Down's Syndrome. Yet still so unherd of both in society and within our healthcare systems. Well, we all learn something new everyday. Hopefully this is the new fact you will learn today!22q has also been previously known as DiGeorge and VFCS, but things have moved on since the 1960's, and so too has genetic research and the name! With 1 in every 992 live births diagnosed with 22q we here at 22q11 Northern Ireland are out to spread that awareness so that everyone including health professionals, family and educators can join in making 22q a commonly known and detected condition. There are over 180 symptoms associated with this condition, it can effect the entire body ranging from minor to fatal issues. Not every single person with 22q will experience every symptom and 2 cases can seem so extremely different. Common features can include growth delays, feeding problems, congenital heart disease, gastrointestinal difficulties, breathing concerns, cleft and cranio-facial issues, calcium deficiencies, immune deficiencies, kidney problems, and skeletal anomalies as well as speech, developmental and cognitive delays, and ADHD, Autism and many anxiety disorders (the list goes on!). A diagnosis, as early as possible, is key to dealing with these issues effectively and to enable an effective care planning. Further detailed information can be found on the Max Appeal website.
