My principal roles were in running the Plant Clinic, managing the BBRO herbicide project and data analysis for in-house trials. In addition I provided scientific support for the lead scientist of the BBRO. I have given several training courses on herbicide use in sugar beet, presented at conferences and have written popular articles for the British Sugar Beet Review.I represented the BBRO at the IIRB Congress and at the Weed Control Study Group and made good contacts with researchers at similar organisations across northern Europe and in the USA. I am still a member of the IIRB. I successfully completed the BASIS course in Crop Protection and am a member of the Professional Register.

I managed weed science work at Broom's Barn in sugar beet, including commercial trials and trials funded by the levy board the BBRO. For herbicide trials (in 2012 there were 20) I was involved with data collection, data analysis and reporting. For other trials, including cereal, oilseed rape and sugar beet pest and disease trials, I undertook the data analysis. I liaised with manufacturers and research organisations and designed and set-up trials. I supervised field staff on data collection, collated and analysed the data, drafted reports and presented results to technical audiences.

The main crop focus of the work at Broom's Barn was sugar beet, although I also worked in maize, oilseed rape, wheat and barley. I undertook day-to-day management of the weed science work at Broom's Barn for many projects including rotational experiments. One major project involved comparing the ecological effects of growing herbicide tolerant crops with conventional crops and was known as the Farm Scale Evaluations. To conduct this work I recruited staff and trained them and existing staff in weed identification. Trials work was sponsored by the BBRO, chemical companies, seed breeders and Defra. Collaborators in this work included the RSPB and the BTO.

I joined ICI at Jealotts Hill after completing my first degree and worked in the Weed Science section. Here we were screening chemicals against a range of weeds, of importance worldwide, in the search for promising new active ingredients, which could be developed into new herbicides. Latterly I worked in the team which developed herbicide products for use in the temperate cereal market.I left here to study for my PhD.
