Our environmental team has capability in natural resource management strategy, policy, planning and science. We take a strategic approach to delivering our projects because right now it’s important we keep in mind the rapidly changing world we live in and frequent changes to the statutory landscape. While we provide environmental science, strategy, policy and planning advice and services to clients, we also work collaboratively within Harrison Grierson to support our land development, 3-waters, and planning teams in their project delivery for our clients. Our work spans water and wastewater infrastructure projects with local government, contributing to freshwater planning for regional councils, plans submissions, preparation of section 32 evaluation reports, resource consent applications and technical guidance development. My role is to lead the team and bring my water and land management technical experience to projects while coaching and mentoring our emerging talent.

I provide project management, environmental consulting and public participation and engagement services on short term contracts. I work alongside my partner to deliver technical analysis, evaluation, review and advice on land management, freshwater management, botany and related environmental and ecological management areas. We assist with project management, resource consent applications and assessment, ecological surveys, submission writing, report writing and review and policy evaluation.Our clients have included Councils, NZ Plant Conversation network and World Wide Fund for Nature

I provided strategic, policy and technical expertise and advice on water management. Being cognisant of environmental and local government legislative changes, and the implications for Auckland Council politically and operationally, was core to the role. I was successful building and maintaining effective relationships within the organisation, with Iwi, Central Government, stakeholders, and other councils enabled collaborative opportunities. Being recognised as an expert in my field I contributed to in house projects and externally. Achievements • Evaluated implications and opportunities created by the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2014. I successfully involved Mana Whenua in early discussions regarding their involvement in the Programme Planning and roll out.• Contributed to the Auckland Plan natural environment section, development of Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan freshwater provisions and Auckland Plan Rural urban Boundary project• Collaborated on Auckland Council projects and programmes including waste, data management systems, peer review system, and Engagement and Consultation integration. • Successfully led the Governance an Engagement work stream for Wai Ora - Wai Māori

I managed the Land and Water Policy team (7 staff) through the final 8 months of Auckland Transition Authority (ATA) process. The role required a high level of staff support and communication through a protracted period of uncertainty. I managed the Proposed Auckland Regional Plan: Air, Land and Water project. The goal was to make as much of the plan operative within 9 months. This created an urgency to mediate and resolve outstanding appeals on the plan (which was drafted 10 years earlier) and find mutually acceptable solutions for submitters and Counil. Achievements• In October 2010 the Auckland Regional Plan: Air, Land and Water Plan was made operative in part, with outstanding appeals primarily on one chapter. • All team members achieved placement in corresponding roles in the new Auckland Council. No redundancies were needed. • Drafting of policy papers on land and water management to inform the incoming council of land and water management issues and recommendations for future policy.

I was responsible for contributing to the evaluation and development of Council policies and plans for land and water management. The role required writing of submissions to Central Government on national land and water policy tools as well as providing land and water technical expertise. As a member of one of several teams that contributed to the policy cycle it was important to have a high level of communication and relationship management across ARC and with relevant agencies (including Auckland Territorial Authorities, Ministry for the Environment, service providers and key stakeholders) Achievements• Successfully designed and led a collaborative project with 7 Auckland Territorial Authorities on the Auckland Waste Stock take and Strategic Assessment. • Completed Waiheke Island Groundwater Management Policy options project. • Contributed to the Water section of the 2009 State of the Environment Report for the Monitoring and Research team• Collaborated with University of Auckland to develop an in-house, cost effective policy analysis training course for staff in Policy and Planning• Contributed to the Auckland Regional Policy Statement review and to resolution of several appeals around bio solids, waste, water and land management, including contaminated land, in the Proposed Auckland Regional Plan: Air, Land and Water

I supported my team with research and technical advice to support the development of policy and plans, determine water resource limits for allocation and review of environmental impact assessments provided to support resource consent applications under the Resource Management Act 1991.Achievements• Successful recipient of the Anglian Water Research Fellowship (1997). • Secured central government funding to resource a collaborative project with the NZ Drilling Industry, Councils and consultants• Project lead collaborative project and authored, New Zealand Standard NZS 4411:2001 Environmental Standard for Drilling of Soil and Rock• Negotiated for Council the use of the Waters and Rivers Commission (Perth) geological database (at no cost) and worked with them to provide staff training. Contributed to the development of the ARC resource consents database• Delivered groundwater projects across the region including Western Springs, Waiwera, Kumeu and Tomorata• Designed and project led several drilling projects across Auckland. Ensured project outcomes were reported and accessible

I was primarily responsible for the processing of resource consent applications for drilling bores and taking and using water from groundwater and surface water. This required evaluation of the application, report writing, field visits and, after consent was granted, compliance monitoring. I contracted drilling services for the establishment of new groundwater monitoring bores, worked with drilling and consulting fraternity to collate, record and provide easily accessible geological data (bores data base). It was through this work, and a prosecution of a drilling company, that I identified the need for Councils to better control the standard of drilling in their regions and the potential contamination and resource management risks associated with poor practice. I contributed to water resource investigation projects through data collation, analysis, writing and peer review
