One of the most important things I've learned so far in my career, is that it's all about the container - as much as I loved my PhD research focus, which is the pure content, and as much as I thought it was the most important thing in the world at the time, I have come to recognize that it isn't where the true value lies - the real gem is all of the learning about how to learn, how to think, how to organize, how to prioritize, how to make decisions, how to critically analyze, how to ask questions and interpret the answers, how to try something new, how to fail, and how to get back up and try again. Similarly, during my post-doctoral training and my time as an Instructor in the Undergraduate Medical Program at UBC, it's the people skills, the ability to communicate, to adapt to different people and different styles of leadership, the emotional intelligence, and the better understanding of where my passions lie, that make me who I am today. What makes me tick? I operate from a place of passion - I need to care about what I am doing, and I need to know that it is meaningful, that it has the potential to make a difference. I am intrinsically motivated - I need an environment where the sky is the limit, I can rise to the height of my own potential. I love to learn - I need a job that is going to challenge me and provide me with opportunities to learn and grow, to force me out of my comfort zone so that I have to reach out to others, find new resources and acquire new knowledge. I love to problem-solve - got a problem? let's drop everything and focus on figuring out a solution. Once all is said and done, then we can go back and figure out how it could have been avoided, or how we could have handled things differently, but in the heat of the moment? No blaming and complaining, it's all hand's on deck, let's find a solution!
