It is their mission to bring sound to those that live without. Cochlear is an Australian company with its EMEA headquarters in Weybridge, UK. IT Services for EMEA are provided mostly through local service desk engineers supported by the IT department located in Mechelen and Sydney. There was no dedicated IT architect for EMEA, part of my job existed in designing the new data centre, as well as the new backup and archive model and the storage architecture. The design had to support the needs of Cochlear EMEA while still adhering to the standards imposed by Cochlear HQ in Sydney. My role as project manager is to ensure that the data centre was sufficiently large, equipped with all the necessary tools and controls.All major components are setup to be redundant. At a later stage the data centre will act as Disaster Recovery site for other European branches of Cochlear. Some of the more important parts of the new EMEA data centre: - Climate Control system (including humidity control) - Intelligent Racks equipped with environmental sensors and smart PDUs - Fully redundant UPS system capable of supporting the data centre for 1 hour - FM-200 gas-based fire suppression system - A redesigned network architecture with a 10 Gbps backboneThe storage equipment was EMC based and consisted of EMC VNX 5300 and EMC VNXe 3150. All servers are virtualized on VMWare. -
