The Patient Relations Specialist serves as ombudsman, or patient/family advocate, in responding promptly to any concerns/complex problems, acting as a liason to all departments within the organization. This job gathers and analyzes quantitative statistics from daily work to identify trends in patient satisfaction, and assists in communicating these trends to the organization, along with contributing to system and process improvements. As well, the Patient Relations Specialist educates VM staff members, leaders and providers in the use of service recovery tools, and initiates recognition of staff members who provide high levels of patient service.

Performs all responsibilities of the Patient Flow Coordinator. Maintains an ongoing, high level of surveillance of patients’ homodynamic status and cardiac rhythms from the monitor screens. Immediately notifies the RN of any changes in patient’s cardiac rhythm and/or vital signs. Calls the Medical Emergency Team (MET) when patient meets MET criteria for rhythm and vital sign instability. Answers phones and routes phone calls to appropriate staff. Greets and directs customers/visitors inquiring at the nurse’s station desk. Creates medication calendars based on transcription of physician orders. Provides successive check to ensure that patients’ home medications are reconciled with current medication orders.
