About Gina Mccann

It all started with one question... “ Would you still teach the same way if your students had the choice to come to class?” These were the first words my professor spoke at our first class meeting. Definitely food for thought...I mean, at the elementary level, students are virtual hostages. They have no option to drop the course if it isn’t to their liking...or if their learning style doesn’t mesh with the teacher’s style. They have no choice. When you think about it, they really are good sports about the whole thing. Then, at the high school level, well...they do have a choice, and we all know what choice they make quite often when they are not engaged. She challenged us to continue to ask ourselves that question throughout the semester-throughout our careers. I believe it is because of this challenge that I have become a much better teacher.We were taught by example...taught by one of the best. We were given a solid foundation of concepts and skills and then asked to continue the process in our own creative way. It was an environment thatencouraged critical thinking, exploration, and innovation. The atmosphere was motivating. Lessonsand activities were hands-on and required “thinking out of the box”. Our class time was effectivelymanaged allowing time for mastery of essential skills. We were spoken to with respect, and in turn,responded respectfully.Everyday after class, I always felt confident, accomplished. and eager...Eager to apply the new ideasthat we had tried in class. It was the most challenging course that I had taken, yet it was the mostrewarding. The standards were high and the workload was heavy. But, we didn’t mind because wesaw the value in what we were learning, and we were given the tools needed to get the job done. It started with one question...and we were empowered. That is the kind of teacher I will strive to be...
