Protagonists or heroes must go on a journey, internally and often externally - think of the main characters from Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz, or Star Wars. What happens to the protagonist externally, changes her internally. Coming-of-age stories can be as simple as showing how she acts immaturely toward people. There is a cause and effect of her actions and outside forces will test the protagonist along her journey until finally she learns from her past mistakes, makes amends, and essentially grows up.Contemporary film scripts have defined the protagonist's starting point in just the first ten minutes. This means we learn about a character by what she does, her external life, how she interacts with others, her position in life, who her antagonist is, what blocks her aspirations and dreams, and who her support network is. This old world she is in must show her wanting and needing change. For example, the protagonist could be living a boring life because they don't have the strength to change. This change is often forced upon her by an external action - think of the Matrix. Often the character's old world is returned to near the end of the film to show how the protagonist has changed."
