GFAC tissue navigators are trained to companion families through the donation process. They will answer your questions, and should you choose to donate your child’s tissue they will coordinate all aspects of the donation.Our focus is on bringing awareness to our team of resourceful navigators. These strategic partnerships will accelerate breakthrough cancer research, improve treatments and ultimately CURE childhood brain cancer.Tragically, one-in-five children who are diagnosed with brain cancer, die from their disease; and sadly, researchers and physicians do not know why the treatments do not work for these children. Until researchers are able to study the brain tissue of children who do not survive their cancer, it will remain a mystery why these children do not survive their disease.When a child’s life ends too soon, donating tissue is a way for a family to take a final stand against cancer. Many families have reported their decision to donate their child’s autopsy tissue was one of the few positive steps they could take during those final tragic days. Tissue donation is a contribution to improving outcomes for children with brain cancer that only families can make.A Simple Two-Step ProcessFor the family, once a decision has been made to donate, only two things are required. Since Michael’s death, Swifty has heard again and again from researchers about the dire need for donated tissue to study. Even when funding for research is available, without tissue, the hands of medical researchers are tied. This remains one of the largest obstacles toward finding a cure, and Swifty is determined to remove this barrier.Secondly we are working at facilitating collaboration in the field of childhood cancer research: collaboration between the many foundations funding pediatric cancer research, collaboration among research institutions and collaboration between researchers. Historically, research has been funded using a model based on competition. That funding model must change to gain momentum toward finding a cure.Our third priority is recurrent medulloblastoma.
