When I first joined a surgical mission to the Philippines in 2002 and again in 2007, I was discouraged to see so many patients that waited for a chance to be selected for a free surgical procedure to cure or correct their ailment, only to be sent home without getting that chance. I knew that the process was unfair and I decided to organize my own group that would not have patients wait and not be seen.In 2008, I organized my first mission with four surgeons. We arranged to have patients pre-screened and scheduled their surgeries over the course of 5 days. In all, we operated on 28 patients and sent no one home without being operated on. This has been the case throughout our next 5 succeeding missions. Each mission grows in the number of volunteers as well as patients and case mix, culminating in major surgical procedures such as open-heart surgery, pacemaker and/or automatic defibrillator insertions, strabismus repair, hysterectomies, and club feet and lower extremity fracture repairs this past March 2013.As the organizer, I arrange for the mission's location, types of cases to be performed, application for temporary physician licenses, procurement of supplies and equipment either purchased or through donations, travel and lodging logistics, security of the team if necessary, and finally provide rest and relaxation after the mission.
