Key achievements• Established and convened the State Environmental Health Director’s (SEHD) group, a forum for SEHD's to collaborate, exchange information and contribute to national policy. SEHD meets monthly by conference call, annually in person, and continue to operate today. • Initiated/implemented demonstration grants for built environment and climate change in SHDs. These were forerunners to CDC’s Climate Ready States and Cities Initiative and Healthy Community Design programs, which continue today.• Led development of policies that contributed to EPA recognising carbon pollution as a health threat; reversing EPA's decision to downgrade standards for rural drinking water; protecting fluoridation standards in drinking water; instituting national reform in food safety operations.• Served as the first “public health” representative on the US EPA led Smart Growth Partners Forum (a cross-sectoral forum promoting better urban development and planning solutions) steering group.• Incident Manager for ASTHO’s response to the Deepwater Horizon Incident, to coordinate action and communication across the affected SHDs, and to facilitate communication with Federal agencies. • Briefed President-elect Obama’s transition team in person on food safety issues.• Prepared testimony for Commissioner, Susan Cooper, Tennessee Health Department, for a US Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on climate change and human health.
