Co-Founder of a related educational program for women in STEM, "Truth Values Community."In-depth update for the pandemic:My WHY is to stir the soul in order to create a sense of belonging for the people and communities I serve. In my work as a Producing Artist, I have been able to use my humorous and inspiring writing and performances to create events that spark compassionate conversation about diversity and inclusion in more than 50 communities nationwide.I began my career as a mathematics Ph.D. student at M.I.T. and Teaching Fellow at Harvard. Being one of a very few young women in my program at the time, I felt out of place, and suddenly left math entirely, not fully understanding why. In so doing, I contributed to what is sometimes called the “leaky pipeline” in the STEM Fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).I eventually forged a new path in the arts, for a number of years immersing myself fully in bringing other artists’ words and music to life as a performer. In the mid-90’s I became interested in bringing my own words to life, and wrote extensively about my life in math as a writing exercise. The plight of women in STEM being ever in the news, plus the urging of my writing colleagues caused me to consider sharing my math stories. The result was my play, "Truth Values," which became so popular nationally that I created a small arts company to tour it and other original musical performances. In 2018, through the generosity of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, we launched, in addition, an educational companion program, "Truth Values Community."Early in 2020, in the midst of preparing for our most successful touring schedule to date, the pandemic hit, and paused all our live events.Moving forward, I am experimenting with manifesting my WHY in new ways, such as creating and producing innovative and diverse events online.
