Graduated electronic engineering. Worked in IT (mainframes, networks, UNIX) for half of my working life, but now I am finally I am back to my scientific roots. My activities concern electrochemistry, materials science, microfabrication, and nanotechnology.I have an extensive microfabrication experience acquired in Northern Europe's largest research cleanroom, MICRONOVA's Nanofab, and was also the main responsible engineer of MICRONOVA's thin film lab. Here as well as other cleanrooms and labs around the world I have gained vast and precious knowledge on all aspects of microtechnologies and materials science. My main focus has been microfluidics, though I have worked and consulted in various other fields of MEMS. I have also used additive manufacturing (3D printing) in my research, both to construct experimental apparata as well as, sometimes, the main focus of my research. Furthermore, I have prepared technical drawings and used (metal) workshops, programmed Arduino boards, and designed my own electronic circuits, to build various experimental setups.During my PhD studies I have spent many months in the Chemistry Department’s Physical Chemistry labs, dealing with the practicalities of electrochemical characterization of fuel cells. I’ve also spent a week operating laser ablation systems in Fraunhofer’s Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen (Germany), and even produced custom glassware with a Bunsen burner. While all researchers in microfabrication must be involved in a multidisciplinary study in one way or the other, I have definitely experienced more of the “outside scientific world” than the average PhD student in MEMS. A microfabricator is essentially a toolmaker, sui generis.As the main responsible engineer for the Thin Film Lab, I have driven and participated in important improvements: for instance, the introduction of a lithography corner (with fumehood, UV lamp, spinner and hot-plate), actions to increase the safety of the KOH etching, etc.
