Research concerning the population dynamics of migratory waterbirds, with the primary aim of identifying factors and processes important for determining and controlling an optimal harvest. A key focus area is development of integrated population models, along with the development of other tools used in the management and conservation of populations.

Responsible for the collation of population and harvest data for the species covered under the AEWA European Goose Management Platform, plus support with the annual assessments.

Worked on the development of a national species management strategy and an adaptive management plan for beaver.

My project is about the quickly growing population of Svalbard breeding pink-footed goose. Especially in Denmark and in Norway, the geese are giving rise to agricultural conflict due to crop damage in the spring. Further, there are signs of degradation of vulnerable tundra vegetation on Svalbard due to increased grazing pressure. Therefore, it has been agreed to instigate an international flyway management plan, which among other things, seeks to stabilize the population by increasing harvest of geese in the autumn. Part of the PhD has been about developing demographic models which can be used in regulating harvest rates at an international level. This has been done together with Dr. Fred Johnson at the University of Florida, U.S. The other part of the PhD has been on the national level. Since the population is well above the target level, this PhD seeks to identify a flexible, accountable and optimal hunting strategy that maximises the number of geese potentially harvestable.
