Cornell Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellow
CurrentMy post-doctoral project examines the environmental remediation of abandoned mining ponds in the Peruvian Amazon. Working in collaboration with Indigenous communities and partner NGO Instituto del Bien Común, our task is to design an environmental monitoring framework that expands indigenous governance in remediation plans.
Honorary Fellow | Center For Mining And Sustainability Studies (Cems)
My research covers the governance of artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Peru, approaching two dimensions: a) the ebb and flow of formalization policy; b) the reorganization of the gold value chain before traceability concerns. Working with multi-sited ethnography in the Amazon, the Andes, and overseas markets, cross-cutting findings highlight rarely identified actors in chain and formalization governance, such as gold traders, processing plants, and international development organizations.
Project Director
l led the learning and collaboration strategies of the National Program for the Sound Management of Chemical Substances. My goals included developing a national research agenda on persistent organic pollutants, including mercury and pesticides.
Ph.D. Candidate In Geography
My dissertation contrasts pathways to mining formalization in Peru and Colombia. I introduce a framework attuned to the temporal dimensions of formalization and the various collectives who struggle to shape this policy. I performed a "patchy" ethnography, covering various arenas over 14 months, ranging from ethnic communities to mining conventions.
