About Greg Brennan

I am a veterinarian and molecular biologist investigating the cross-species transmission of viruses. Over my 20-year career, I have studied both DNA and RNA viruses in both BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory settings. Through this work, I have developed expertise in the molecular analysis of viral evolution. My current work explores aspects of the genetic and biochemical basis by which viral and host factors evade or inhibit one another. To achieve these goals, I use a multi-disciplinary approach including deep sequencing, experimental evolution, and molecular biology to map viral evolution in high resolution. Recently, this work has extended to nascent transcriptomic analyses (e.g. SLAMseq and Bru-seq) coupled with proteomic analyses to to measure the impact of viral RNA polymerase mutations on host and virus responses to infection.Expertise: Virology, molecular biology, animal models, host-virus interactions, innate immunity, evolutionary biology, science communication, project leadership, biosafety protocol development, committee leadership, mentoring.

    Combined evolutionary biology, retroviral transduction of primary cells, genomics, and molecular biology to investigate host-virus interactions. Demonstrated that gene amplification of a weak viral PKR antagonist increases virus replication in non-permissive primary cells from humans and multiple primate species, and identified two novel vaccinia virus mutations that contribute to viral inhibition of PKR in a species-specific manner.
