Duties at AFRL include:Supported the U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense mission through development and management of power generation technologies for use on spacecraft. Provided project leadership and management for next generation III-V multijunction solar cell research and developmentPrincipal investigator for R&D effort to create novel quantum based structures to improve radiation tolerance of space solar cells and improve end of life efficiencyMaintaining and adapting world class laboratory equipment for characterizing advanced space solar cells and providing measurement verification to government, industry, and university partners.

As a research assistant, Geoff worked to enhance next generation solar cell conversion efficiency under the supervision of Dr. S. M. Bedair. As a research group, we strived to increase efficiency of triple junction solar cells, which have the highest efficiency of any type of solar cell available. Our specific goal was to improve triple junction cell efficiency by incorporating an InGaAs/GaAsP strained layer multiple quantum well structure for the GaAs subcell.

Geoff's primary role at the NC Solar Center (NCSC) included designing and installing a 1 kW photovoltaic system. This unique PV setup was installed atop a vehicle trailer and used as a mobile classroom and electric car charging station. Geoff also participated in the NC Wind Working group that strives to promote wind power and sets guidelines for its use of wind power within NC. Other responsibilities included installing and taking down towers for the NCSC anemometer loan program.

Geoff collaborated with the JAMIP project (Joint Analytical Model Improvement Process) to develop experimental war fighting scenarios using JWARS (Joint Warfare System) simulation software. He conducted networking experiments as part of the Trident Warrior 06 Ship rider Team that help the U.S. Navy integrate new technologies by allowing real-time testing at sea. Geoff also wrote software for the E3 (Electromagnetic Environmental Effects) group at SPAWAR Systems Center-Charleston including a program for E3 that helps engineers determine safety guidelines for antenna radiation hazards and a program to calculate interference margins between transmitter and receiver antennas. Other responsibilities included designing an MS Access databases for the purposes of maintaining parts inventory for U.S. Navy ships and managing sensitive material coming into and out of laboratory safe.
