About Kelly Cone

I am passionate about process and technology innovation and how they can change industries and people's lives. My education is in architectural design and documentation, but my experience within the AEC space is far more varied. I have implemented various practice technologies into design, estimating, and construction teams and workflows; worked on amazing projects such as the SaRang Global Ministry center in Seoul as a designer, and Renzo Piano's addition to the Louis Kahn Kimbell Art Museum as a contractor; and have had the privilege of growing and leading one of the most talented VDC & Process Innovation teams in the industry. Those experiences have taught me there is a better way to create our built environment, and I want to make that way become a reality. Now, with ClearEdge3D, I can put that experience towards creating the tools we need to do so. Our world is filled with new, exciting, and sometimes even amazing technologies; but the AECO industry is often last in line to get their hands on them. At ClearEdge we are committed to applying the most recent advancements in reality capture, computer vision, and positioning technologies to dramatically improve what can be accomplished in the design and construction of buildings!

  • The Beck Group
Director Of Virtual Design And Construction
The Beck Group Apr 2013 - Oct 2016
    Dallas, Texas, Us
After the completion of the Kimbell, I returned back to the corporate office and took over the leadership of the Virtual Building Group. This group was initially regional as well, with loose ties to a similar team in another office. We merged those two teams into a national group, and over the next three years we grew that team from 4 people to 18. We were initially tasked with supporting and training for Navisworks and Synchro and with applying BIM to solve issues on challenging projects. We started a small laser scanning and scan-to-BIM business unit and grew that to 6 people providing those and additional services to our projects nation-wide. Our support team grew to 12 people to perform 3D coordination for our jobs, and took responsibility for creating and tracking the CPM schedules for all our projects, managing our BIM implementation, and supporting our project administration systems company-wide.
  • The Beck Group
    Innovations Director
The Beck Group Aug 2008 - Apr 2013
    Dallas, Texas, Us
In late 2008, we recognized that we were not fully utilizing BIM within our organization. BIM was still effectively a design-only tool. Given our unique structure as an integrated firm, we had unique opportunities to leverage our design BIMs in estimating, coordination, scheduling, and other workflows. At this point, myself and two other colleagues proposed the company create a position that was focused on the broader implementation of BIM within all our disciplines. The initial candidate we recommended to take that role left before it was finalized, and as a result I was chosen to take the role in their place. While in this role I was still responsible for the BIM implementation, but also expanded my focus to include the implementation of both Innovaya and Navisworks. Initially, this included learning and implementing those tools directly, although in both cases additional positions were created for individuals to lead those implementations. Given the broader focus, this also entailed hiring a new BIM manager to take over the Revit implementation I had started. In all cases we were lucky to find and hire extremely talented people to continue those implementations and take them farther than I ever could have. This allowed me to spend my last two years in this role working on unique projects like the Sarang Global Ministry Center and the Kimbell Art Museum's Piano Pavilion.
  • The Beck Group
    Bim Manager
The Beck Group May 2007 - Aug 2008
    Dallas, Texas, Us
After presenting to our leadership team, the company decided to move forward with additional projects in BIM. In order to address the training, template, and content deficiencies we experienced on our first job, I was asked to become our BIM Manager and help drive our implementation of Revit forward. This began as a regional role in Dallas, but quickly became a national role as some additional pilot projects were started in our other offices. During this time I was responsible for developing and providing in house training, translating our CAD standards into Revit standards and incorporating those into the templates and content I developed. Over the three year period I was responsible for this implementation we moved completely from CAD to Revit as our production tool, saw an increase in efficiency and coordination in our drawings, and became recognized as an industry leader in our use of BIM within a design practice.
  • The Beck Group
    Architectural Intern
The Beck Group Jun 2006 - May 2007
    Dallas, Texas, Us
I began my career at Beck in our design department working one several third party architecture and integrated projects including Temple Baptist Church in Odessa, TX and several American Screen Works movie theaters. On those projects I was responsible for designing various building features and spaces alongside our design principals, and documenting those projects in AutoCAD and eventually Revit. The ASW projects were our first Revit projects at Beck, and as the individual who spent the most time in Revit on those projects, I was asked to report to our leadership team about the challenges and successes we had experienced on our first BIM projects.

The University Of Texas At Austin Aug 2002 - May 2005
    Austin, Tx, Us
I worked for the Assistant Dean on administrative tasks, filing, answering the phone, and on SOA admissions each spring. This job involved routing time critical issues within the SOA's leadership for quick resolution, and handling sensitive personal information in a confidential manner. This job taught me the value of building personal relationships with co-workers in order to facilitate getting work done efficiently, and the importance of consistency and integrity when handling sensitive information about other people.
  • The University Of Texas At Austin
    Soa Technology Lab Student Intern
The University Of Texas At Austin Aug 2003 - May 2004
    Austin, Tx, Us
In addition to my position with the Assistant Dean, I worked for two semesters in our computer lab helping with software deployments, general technical troubleshooting and support for other students, and working with the printers and plotters. During this same period, the school purchased its first 3D printer and as a result I also was able to help research how to use it with our design software and then teach others how to use it.
  • Austin Lindy Hop
    Dance Instructor
Austin Lindy Hop Jun 2003 - Aug 2005
Taught Swing and Lindy Hop classes at a private dance school. Classes at ALH focused on fundamentals over choreography, and emphasized the lead-follow relationship in swing dancing. I helped develop and refine the curriculum with the founder and other instructors, and taught two classes back to back once a week. The most important thing I learned at ALH was that anyone can dance if they want to learn and are properly taught.
