Crane Softwrights Ltd. is a consultancy delivering Computer Systems Analysis and training services worldwide since April 1997. We focus primarily in structured text processing related to the Web-based Extensible Markup Language (W3C XML) family of Recommendations and the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML - ISO 8879:1986) family of Standards. We specialize in the structuring of and processing of information, in particular training and deploying the use of the W3C XSL/XSL-FO, XSLT, XPath and XQuery set of Recommendations and OASIS Universal Business Language (UBL) artefacts and systems for electronic commerce and transportation.

I began computer programming in earnest June 30, 1971 using FORTRAN IV on an IBM 1130, using cards with an IBM 026 keypunch. I achieved an undergraduate Bachelor of Mathematics degree in Honours Computer Science at the renowned University of Waterloo in May 1981, having learned a number of programming languages, principles, and techniques. My programming career started on mainframe computers (IBM 360/370) and RJE, moving to very early microcomputers (I8080, M6800, Z80, etc.) in Silicon Valley, California. I may have been the University of Waterloo's first co-op student in a Silicon Valley computer company, but I cannot verify that. I architected and implemented videotex systems on personal computer hardware before getting into markup. I first got involved in international standardization and ISO committees in May 1988. I first got involved in OASIS standards by participating in the inaugural SGML Open meeting in 1993. I made a career traveling the world teaching my own training classes in technologies in which I participated during the standards development. Mine was the first company out of the gate with a hands-on XSLT/XPath class, and the first out of the gate with a hands-on XSL-FO class. In my retirement I continue to make piecemeal revenue with XSLT/XPath/XSL-FO in order to pay for my standards travel and participation so as not to dip into retirement savings. I continue to stretch my own envelope by jumping into new technologies such as blockchain using old strategies and approaches such as state machine architectures. I am to the point where I can be choosy picking interesting revenue work that lands in my lap while I travel the world waving the flag for standardization and open standards. I am an incorrigible extrovert reveling at being centre stage in all that I do, including international conferences in front of hundreds of delegates (provided I know what I'm talking about!).
