Executives in family-owned businesses are hampered by the brands they inherit from ancestors.It’s a huge issue because these brands impact everything: the culture, delegation of leadership, the approach to the market, customer experience, investors and partnerships. Not only does it prove a toleration – something to work around – but a major source of challenge to activating a succession plan, scaling or selling the business. What results from this? A sloppy, disorganized and barely navigable brand. An internal team that doesn’t really understand or get managed to a clear, focused brand vision, mission, values and differentiators. An inauthentic portrayal of who you know your organization is. Getting beat by the competition. Every time. Why? Because the brand is the root system of an organization, and it must connect every time at a human level. A poor root system creates a diffuse, leaky and at-risk organization.Most importantly, it leaves you feeling like there is no way forward – or out. That’s why I started my independent brand strategy practice nearly two decades ago. I desired to impact family-owned business to do great things, helping them flourish, scale, grow and pass themselves on to new generations of leadership. And not by doing a bunch of jargony stuff that is deemed a part of the “creative industry.” Instead, by being human, leveraging human collaboration and creativity, to get to the heart and soul of a brand that is rendered with strategic acuity.
