About Glen Wolfram
"Oh! Now I understand." Wow. I live to hear it, and to say it. The light bulb moment is a great experience. As a software engineering manager, my goal is to help my ICs, and my fellow EMs to learn a little each week (and sneak a little learning for myself). I help them with their technical problems, and honing their soft skills. I also learn from them. I get to say, "explain how this works", and "nice job, that's really clever". It's great to see the smiles afterward. I get to hear how much those around me care about what they are working on. I get to express my enthusiasm as well.To achieve this success, I depend on the values within the Heart of Agile (https://heartofagile.com). It's quite simple: collaborate, deliver, reflect, improve.Rarely is success a purely individual effort. Getting everyone to envision and move toward a common goal requires collaboration. If a team collaborates, it can create anything.Collaborating isn't enough. Delivering is the ultimate measuring stick. Alright then, what have I delivered? What light bulbs have I had turned on? Here are a few:• I started out in the weeds of embedded systems, writing in assembly language for a Brunswick Bowling system.• I shifted to writing video games. At first, stand up arcade games. Later came games for the PC. Players expect to have fun, and lots of it! I had to learn C and C++. I also needed to learn the ins-and-outs of the domains of those games. I learned much about tennis, football, baseball, flying and history of WW I and WW II. I once worked on 3 of the top 11 games as rated by Computer Gaming World.• I helped build a medical data system, instilling compatibility with the Affordable Care Act. As a result, patients received better medical care. I became proficient in Java, JavaScript, JSON, SQL and NoSQL data stores.• I channeled my love of teaching into becoming a highly rated technical instructor, teaching thousands of students, and having a 95% satisfaction rating. The most common word I receive on student's evaluations is "enthusiastic".• I embraced the challenge of becoming an engineering manager. I led 10 ICs across various projects in weekly 1-on-1s and writing quarterly reviews. In addition, we worked together to set professional career goals, and how they will achieve them.I work well in both remote and in-office environments. Although one downside to fully remote teams: no company softball or volleyball teams. Well, maybe VR can make that happen. One last thing. If Iron Maiden calls and asks me to photograph their current tour, I'm asking for a sabbatical.
Listed skills include Software Development, Scrum, C#, Agile Methodologies, and 26 others.
