I'm the head of the journalism department at City St George’s, University of London, leading a team of around 30 staff and 50 visiting lecturers, serving 500 students. The department has a 90.5% satisfaction rate (NSS 2024); we are first in London for graduate prospects in our subject area (THE 2024; CUG 2024), and were rated the best journalism department in the country in the Guardian University Guide in 2023.I previously worked as a staff journalist at national level at organisations such as the BBC, Daily Telegraph, Washington Post and The Independent.I was awarded my PhD in journalism studies at City and my areas of research include live journalism (journalism as live event); humanitarian reporting, media treatment of refugees and journalism archives. I'm the principal investigator on the British Academy funded project on the work of Alistair Cooke, and was co-investigator on the Google Digital News Initiative funding DMINR project. I co-founded the News on Stage live journalism events project and am also co-director of Contemporary Narratives Lab. I am the director of the European Journalism Observatory UK. I also write book reviews for the Mail on Sunday and am the Overnights UK correspondent for ABC Radio, AustraliaI provide media training and consultancy, and have worked as a consultant for organisations such as Theos, UNESCO and Save the Children UK.I'm an awardwinning short story writer and playwright. I was long-listed for the 2023 Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize, and shortlisted for the 2020 and 2019 Exeter Novel Prizes, and have had work performed at Theatre 503, Irlam Fringe Festival, the Pleasance Islington, Octagon Bolton Festival, Royal Court Bar.
